As the UK braces itself for a potential record-breaking heatwave with temperatures set to sizzle at a whopping 30 degrees, our cool experts offer their coolest advice.

JP’s pro tips to help you stay cool:

Hydrate. This is the most crucial tip. Always ensure you drink plenty of water, more than usual, to keep your body temperature down and stay hydrated.

Make a DIY aircon unit. If you are yet to have an air conditioning unit installed, you can make a makeshift air conditioner using a bowl of ice and a fan. Simply position the fan so it blows air over the ice. As the ice melts, the fan will distribute the cooler air.

Freeze your bedsheets. This may sound odd but is very effective. Put your bedsheets in a plastic bag and freeze them for a few hours before bedtime. It can provide temporary relief and help you fall asleep in a cooler environment.

Use light-coloured bedding. Light colours reflect heat, while dark colours absorb it. Use light-coloured bedding to keep your sleeping area as cool as possible.

Close curtains and blinds. Keeping your curtains and blinds closed during the day can help prevent your home from becoming a mini greenhouse.

Open windows at night. If the temperature drops at night, take advantage of it. Open your windows to let the cooler air in.

Avoid strenuous activities. During a heatwave, try to limit physical activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day, to avoid overheating.

Cold showers. Taking a cold shower or bath can quickly bring down your body temperature.

Wear loose, light clothing. Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing allows your body to stay cooler. Cotton is a good fabric choice as it’s breathable.

Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Digesting food raises your body’s metabolism and can make you feel hotter. Stick to smaller meals and try to eat more fruits and vegetables that have a high-water content.

If you’ve tried all the above and are still sweltering, there is one final step that you would benefit from… the installation of an air conditioning unit.
