Set up your HVAC system for a warm winter

Like it or not, winter is fast approaching. With the first autumn storm now behind us, it’s time to think about getting ready for the winter storms and colder weather that are sure to come over the coming months. If you are responsible for the HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) for your office, warehouse, or factory we have put together a few easy tips to help you check it and deal with any issues now before they end up becoming a problem in the middle of a snow storm or cold spell.

  • Check your air filters. Are they clean or do they need to be cleaned or even replaced? By keeping a close eye on your system’s pressure you will pick up on any drops that may mean it’s time to clean or replace your filters. When your filters are clean your system will also be running efficiently and not costing more than it should to do its job.
  • Check your AHUs. Are your air handling units prepared for cold weather or do you need to use additives or coils to prevent freezing?
  • Check your vents and grills. You want them to be clear of any obstructions such as leaves, branches, or any debris so that they are allowing air to circulate normally. If there are any blockages, the system will have to work much harder making it much more inefficient.
  • Consider servicing. Particularly important if your system is a little older or works especially hard – e.g. in warehouses that have high heating or cooling demands. Like with anything mechanical, regular servicing will keep your system working efficiently; it will also identify potential problems early on so they can be fixed in a timely manner and ultimately will keep your system working well for longer.

Home HVAC systems

Where you have an HVAC system in your home, while it may not be as complex as that in a large commercial or office space, it still needs to be properly maintained to keep it working efficiently. Home systems in particular need servicing twice a year and a good time to do that would at the end of the cold and warm seasons where the system switches from hot to cold and vice versa. This way it can be checked for any problems which can then be rectified quickly before they become complex and expensive to deal with. It will also make sure that your filters and vents are checked by a professional, and cleaned and cleared as necessary, to keep your system working efficiently and cost-effectively.

Servicing regularly is particularly important where warranties are still in place to keep them valid should something go wrong and replacement parts are necessary. We have a variety of servicing options to suit your needs and budgets, from one-off servicing to servicing contracts that will cover an agreed number of services in a given year to help keep your HVAC system going for a long, long time.
