Now that we are firmly into the colder months, you will want to prepare your HVAC system for when temperatures reach their lowest in the first few months of 2022. Your system will have different requirements depending on whether you have an internal or external air conditioning unit and whether or not it has heating capabilities. In order to prepare your system for winter and ensure it is ready to go when the warm weather begins to return, you will want to take a few precautions. Allow us to talk you through these in further detail.
System maintenance
You will want to ensure you have the necessary HVAC equipment to carry out a comprehensive clean, without causing damage to the system, as well as checking coolant levels and ensuring the coil is still functioning correctly. These are complicated checks to carry out, so we recommend you contact a HVAC professional to service your air conditioning unit.
Check the filter
Seeing as your air conditioning unit will most likely have seen a lot of use during the warmer months of the year, it is likely that the air filters have been working hard to ensure clean air is circulated around your property. It will be worth your while to check over your system and clean the dirty filter if necessary, so that it can continue to work effectively through the winter season. We recommend cleaning or changing your filter every two to three months.
Adjust settings
Ensuring your system is set up for the winter months can help your building to become more energy efficient. Using programmable thermostats will allow you to control when your HVAC unit turns on and can be set up to benefit all the building’s occupants.
External unit
If you have an air conditioner outside your building, it will not be suitable if the temperature drops too low. As such, you will want to take these steps to protect it ready for use in the summer.
- Turn off the power – Find the power source and flip the switch to off to save power and prevent the unit from turning on when it is not needed.
- Cleaning – As your external unit has been exposed to the elements, it may require a more thorough cleaning process to remove any dirt and debris that has settled on it.
- Protect it from the elements – You will want to ensure that exposed pipes are protected by foam pipe covers. You can also purchase a cover for the unit to protect against leaves and snow, and secure this with vinyl ropes or bungee cords to prevent the wind blowing this away.
